We use liturgical services that normally include Holy Communion. The music is more traditional than not. Services last about one hour.
This service is held once per month in place of Sunday School. It is led by the Junior High youth. Families sit together. Songs are sung and Bible verses are read. Songs are child friendly. The service concludes with an activity that involves each family working together. Many times, something to take home is created. At Shades Valley, we recognize the importance of practicing our faith every day at home in addition to Sunday worship. This service lasts one hour. The atmosphere is very casual. Children are encouraged to participate and move about the space.
We hold a healing service the 5th Sunday of the month. The healing services incorporate simple music and prayer in the Taize style. Participants may receive laying on of hands and anointing with oil if they wish. "In the ministry of healing, the church... offers and celebrates gifts such as... God's presence with strength and comfort in time of suffering... and Gods love embodied in the community of faith" (ELW p. 276).
Advent or Lent
These services help us take 30 minutes out of our busy week to focus on the meaning of Advent or Lent. The music is simple and lovely. The Holden Prayer book is used during this service from Holden Village in Washington. Offerings are dedicated to a particular mission on which we choose to focus that season.
SVLC does not have a Social worker on staff, so we do not distribute items to those in need. However, we do collect items and donate those to some wonderful organizations in the community that are good at distributing to those that need it. If you find yourself in need, please visit the following organizations that we support.

Shades Valley Lutheran Church is conveniently located on Shades Creek Parkway (Lakeshore Drive) across from Brookwood Village Mall.
If you are using I-65 southbound (coming from Birmingham) take Exit 255 and turn left onto Lakeshore Drive, which becomes Shades Creek Pkwy. Go approximately three miles and we are on the left.
From I-65 northbound (going towards Birmingham) take Exit 255 (same as above) and turn right onto Lakeshore Drive.
From Highway 280 (in bound, north/west bound), take the exit for County Road 149, turn left, go under the overpass and turn right at the first light. This is the Luckie Building driveway but it will bring you to the parking lot of the church.
Using Highway 280 outbound, take the exit for Homewood, County Road 149. At the light at the bottom of the exit, simply go straight (when the light is green...) and you will enter the Luckie Building driveway. Bear to the left and you will find yourself in the parking lot of the church.
